Parts of the process behind this painting felt unexpectedly challenging.
I wanted the movement of the water to carry energy without disturbing the stillness of the scene.
Again and again, I returned to the depth within the rocks, the softness of the current, and the quiet atmosphere I was trying to preserve.
Although the piece began from an entirely different reference, it slowly started reminding me of the river crossings near Port Renfrew — especially the areas surrounding the San Juan River, where water moves steadily through stone and forest with a calm intensity that lingers long after you leave.
Over time, the painting became less about a specific place and more about the feeling of unexpectedly discovering one of those hidden West Coast landscapes: moving water echoing through the trees, damp coastal air, moss-covered rock, and the rare stillness found in remote parts of Vancouver Island.
This is one of the pieces I feel most connected to. More than a landscape, it became a reflection on quiet resilience, movement, and the emotional calm nature offers when we allow ourselves to slow down enough to notice it.
