Whether experienced in the quiet of early morning or beneath the heavy clouds of late afternoon, the atmosphere along the shoreline feels immersive — softened by mist, salt air, and the endless movement of water.
I wanted the piece to evoke the feeling of standing barefoot in wet sand while small waves pull scattered stones gently back and forth along the shore. There’s a particular rhythm to that sound on the West Coast — subtle, repetitive, almost hypnotic — accompanied only by distant seagulls moving through the fog.
Layers of Payne’s grey and warm sienna tones create a balance between coolness and warmth, reflecting the emotional contrast I often feel along the coastline: stillness and movement, solitude and comfort, memory and presence existing together at once.
