Arbutus River Song was inspired by the quiet beauty of the West Coast landscape — where twisted arbutus trees lean toward the water and riverbanks soften beneath layers of moss, stone, and drifting fog.
While painting this piece, I kept returning to the feeling of standing near the shoreline listening to water move gently through the landscape. The sound of the river against pebbles, the scent of damp earth and cedar, and the rich warmth of the arbutus bark created an atmosphere that felt both grounding and deeply restorative.
Soft textured brushstrokes and layered tones of greens, siennas, and earthy coastal hues bring movement and warmth into the scene, while weathered driftwood and flowing water create a quiet rhythm throughout the composition. I’ve always been drawn to the way arbutus trees seem to hold both strength and fragility at once — shaped by wind, weather, and time, yet endlessly resilient.
More than a landscape, this painting became a reflection on stillness, connection, and the emotional calm found within the hidden corners of the Pacific Northwest.
