There is a particular kind of freedom in watching a Blue Heron take flight. One moment it is standing quietly along the shoreline, completely still and grounded in its surroundings. Then, almost effortlessly, it opens its wings and disappears across the water.
Weightless Flight was inspired by that transformation—the quiet moment when something so grounded becomes almost weightless. I wanted to capture the grace of the Blue Heron in motion, while keeping the feeling of the calm coastal landscape it has just left behind.
Painted directly onto a naturally weathered piece of driftwood, the artwork brings together the heron, the water and the surrounding landscape in a small, intimate scene. The irregular shape of the wood adds an organic quality to the composition, making the painting feel like a fragment of the shoreline itself.
I was especially drawn to the contrast between the heron's size and its effortless movement. There is strength in those wide wings, but there is also a sense of surrender—of simply allowing the wind to carry you.
Finished with a clear resin layer, the painted surface has a smooth, glass-like finish that brings depth to the colours while preserving the natural character of the driftwood. Set on handcrafted copper feet, Weightless Flight can be displayed as a small sculptural artwork on a shelf, console, mantel or tabletop.
