There is a particular feeling that comes with standing somewhere completely exposed to the elements—nothing between you and the vastness of the sky, the water stretching out in every direction, and the landscape reduced to its simplest forms.
Under the Naked Sky is about that feeling of openness. I wanted this piece to hold the quiet vulnerability of being surrounded by nature without anything to shield you from it. The sky feels expansive, the landscape feels distant, and the scene invites you to slow down and simply look.
I was drawn to the idea of a landscape without distraction—just land, water and sky meeting one another. The simplicity creates space for the viewer to bring their own memories into the scene: a quiet walk along the coast, a place where they once stood alone, or that feeling of looking toward the horizon and realizing how much bigger the world is than the moment you're in.
As with my other wood pieces, I allow the natural character of the driftwood to become part of the artwork rather than hiding it. The weathered surface and organic contours add another layer to the landscape, connecting the painted scene to the natural world it represents.
Under the Naked Sky is ultimately a quiet piece about openness, solitude and the freedom of having nothing between you and the horizon.
