The Passage Home
The Passage Home is a one-of-a-kind original artwork painted directly onto naturally weathered driftwood. A small pod of orcas moves quietly through deep coastal waters, their dark silhouettes and reflections travelling beneath a warm, glowing sky.
The long, organic shape of the driftwood becomes part of the story. Its weathered contours create the feeling of a passage through the landscape — a journey along the coast, through familiar waters, and toward somewhere that feels like home.
I was drawn to the contrast between the deep blue and charcoal tones of the ocean and the warmth of the amber sky above. The forested shoreline and distant landscape give the scene a sense of place, while the orcas bring movement and life to the water.
As with my other driftwood works, I allow the natural character of the wood to remain visible beneath the painting. Its grain, ridges, irregular edges and weathered surface become part of the artwork itself. A clear resin finish adds depth and luminosity to the painted surface while creating a smooth, glass-like finish over the naturally textured wood.
Displayed on handcrafted copper feet, The Passage Home is both a coastal painting and a piece of naturally weathered West Coast wood — a small, one-of-a-kind story of movement, memory, and the instinct to return home.
