The long, organic shape of the driftwood lends itself beautifully to this scene, almost like a window opening onto the ocean. I wanted the composition to feel spacious and peaceful — that moment when the water seems to stretch endlessly ahead and the world becomes quiet.
The natural character of the wood remains an important part of the artwork. Its weathered edges, grain and subtle imperfections are allowed to show through the painting, creating a connection between the physical history of the driftwood and the coastal landscape painted upon it.
