Clayoquot Sound

There are places along the West Coast where the landscape feels almost untouched by time. Clayoquot Sound is one of those places—a meeting of rugged forest, open water, distant islands and constantly changing skies, where the scale of the landscape makes you feel both small and completely connected to it.

This piece was inspired by the quiet drama of Clayoquot Sound and the way its landscape shifts with the weather. The water can appear calm and reflective one moment, while the surrounding mountains and forests disappear into mist the next. Rather than trying to capture one exact moment, I wanted to capture that feeling of being surrounded by something vast, wild and deeply alive.

I love the way the West Coast gives you so many layers to work with—water in the foreground, islands and shoreline in the distance, forest rising behind them, and sky constantly changing above it all. Clayoquot Sound is my interpretation of that layered landscape, painted with an emphasis on atmosphere, depth and the quiet beauty of the Pacific coast.

The natural character of the wood becomes part of the artwork, allowing the landscape to feel connected to something organic and elemental. The finished piece is a small interpretation of a place that feels enormous—a reminder of the wildness and beauty that exists along our coast.
